As the daughter of two Morgan State University professors, I have been blessed by a lifelong affiliation with HBCUs.  Growing up, I spent many summers on Morgan’s campus, seated quietly in the back corner of the classroom, mesmerized by my parents’ lectures on history and education. Morgan always felt like home to me, providing roots and wings for my professional journey and life’s mission.

Inspired by Morgan intellectuals who continue to mentor me and pour into my life, at an HBCU, I discovered that I, too, could join the ranks as a scholar and a difference maker. Morgan State was my clear choice when I decided to pursue graduate studies, and I am forever grateful for my HBCU experience. I will always hold fast to what my Morgan experience taught me, most importantly, that excellence is non-negotiable.

As an HBCU graduate, I am empowered now more than ever to personify Morgan’s motto to “grow the future, and lead the world”. Yes, the little girl once seated in the back corner of classrooms on Morgan’s campus, is now a proud Morgan alumnae, seated at the higher education leadership table, living her calling to dismantle barriers facing students and to advance academic achievement and student success for all.
