Why I Chose Coppin State University

As a teenage mother, I honestly assumed that college was out of my reach.  My best friend, a Coppin State alumna, told me that I needed to “stop playing and go to college”.  As a first generation college student, I didn’t know where to start.  I took 3 buses to get to Coppin State College (later renamed Coppin State University), with baby in tow, to get information on applying.  I will never forget the dynamic and patient admissions counselor who guided me step-by-step.

The Coppin community believed in me and provided a strong network of support that I didn’t realize I needed.  This small community allowed me to find my voice in a safe environment where the color of my skin was not a factor.  It was truly the faculty and my counselor in the Honors program who helped me build my professional foundation.  Thus, I gained the skills and courage to participate in internship opportunities at Johns Hopkins University as well as the University Of Maryland School Of Pharmacy.  I often wonder if I would’ve had these same opportunities at a PWI.

Had it not been for the advisors, professors, students, counselors and my mentors at Coppin, I would certainly not be where I am today.  My experiences at Coppin led a young woman who believed she couldn’t, to blossom into a brave woman who realized that the she can.
