CCBC has been steadily growing from a grass roots group of discipline faculty and faculty librarians interested in and using OER to a full-fledged community on campus. At CCBC we have an OER/Textbook Affordability Committee that works to promote, advocate, and coordinate OER and Open Education efforts. The committee is comprised of at least one member from each school, including Deans, as well as, other departments on campus: instructional design, bookstore, business services, and marketing and communications.
The Committee has had some major accomplishments over the last couple of years:
OER/Affordable Textbook Grant Program. Through funding from Barnes & Noble each year we have $10,000 to give away for projects that look to adopt, adapt, create, or sustain OER and affordable textbooks. Efforts from this program have saved students over $1,000,000 on textbooks. Look for the CFP in April!
Course Marking Initiative. The committee has worked with Enrollment Services staff to highlight courses using Free or Low-Cost (less than $40) course materials. This information appears in the Notes section for course using these materials.
UN Sustainable Development Goals Open Pedagogy Faculty Fellowship Program. CCBC leads this award-winning fellowship program along with Montgomery College in Maryland, Maricopa Community Colleges and Pima Community College in Arizona, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Thompson Rivers University, and Langara Community College in British Columbia to create renewable assignments based on the 17 sustainable development goals established by the United Nations. CCBC faculty chosen for this fellowship are partnered with faculty from the other institutions to create 3 renewable assignments. See some of the renewable assignments from CCBC Faculty on the Open Pedagogy tab. For more information take a look at the application process:

CCBC OER Institute. CCBC Library was awarded a $20,000 grant in 2021 from the Maryland Open Source Textbook Initiative to create an OER Institute that targets highly enrolled and general education courses to adopt, adapt, and/or create OER. This Institute consists of a 4-day summer session of workshops, open labs throughout the year, and concludes with the piloting of the new OER. Librarians provide one-on-one support throughout the Institute. Look for the CFP in May!
