Choosing A Topic : Start with a General Idea

Starting your paper is hard, but it is a very important part of your research. Research is inquiry - asking for more information, finding the right questions, being curious, investigating. Begin with a big, simple idea and be aware during your investigation process. Stay aware of the size of the assignment and you will find the right fit!

Picking a Topic IS Research

The picking of a topic - and adjusting that topic as you continue researching and writing - is PART of the research process. It is normal to struggle a little here.

1. Always choose a topic you are actually interested in.

2. Be open to adjusting your topic to reflect your research. Let the specific topic find you in the research.

3. Visit a writing center for confirmation that you're on the right track or read sample papers online.
